The Importance of Male Model Inclusivity

You will now find more and more body diversity included within both high-street brands and high-end fashion as the demand for plus-size models increasingly grows. However, a lot of the development in diversity in the past 30-years can be seen mostly within women’s fashion. This continues to push the stereotype that women care more about fashion than men.

In the most recent years, the gap in the fashion industry to represent plus-size male models is slowly being addressed. However, the acceleration of this movement is important now more than ever.

In the UK, young children spend on average 2-3 hours a day in front of a screen. This can be either  watching television, playing computer games, social media, and many other forms of entertainment. One thing that a lot of free online media contains is exposure to advertisements. By not celebrating body diversity, advertising campaigns can have a devastating impact on a younger audience.

Young boys may compare themselves to the models they see in their favourite brands' marketing and shop windows and develop insecurities with their bodies. Creating an inclusive industry is key to its growth by bringing new opportunities to increase creativity, innovation, flexibility, morale and careers.

Male model inclusivity can help support in the reduction of mental health issues at an early age. In England, around one in eight men has a common mental health problem, such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). This is an alarming amount of men in the UK and a topic that is not covered often enough!

Brands such as Rhianna’s Savage x Fenty are all about inclusivity, whether that be including plus size, pregnant or drag race queens onto their runways and  into their web stores. This has been well received by the internet with one positive tweet from the public reaching over 320K likes. Other high-street and high-end fashion brands should learn from Rihanna and celebrate boy diversity.

Male model inclusivity stems even further than just plus-size models. It is important for the fashion industry to continue and normalise the diversity of male models for all ethnicities and races. When discussing the topic of male model inclusivity, conversations that brands will have regarding their model portfolios should also cover these key areas as well.

Here at Big Clothing 4 U, we believe that the clothing industry can do better. Littered with sculpted pecs, washboard waists and skinny legs, we found that most promotional material does not represent us - the big and tall men of the world. To change that, with the help of strongman Laurence Shahlaei, we used our voice to ask the questions that matter in this online survey.

Male model inclusivity can also drive interest in career choices for young boys to become models. If you have an interest in becoming a male model, Big Clothing 4 U are always looking to work with new aspiring models.

How to become a male model
Here at Big Clothing 4 U, we work with models and influencers that truly represent big and tall men, so you can see exactly how the clothing we offer will fit - no matter what your size.

We know how frustrating it can be seeing men’s clothing stores using slim or muscular models to advertise their clothes. We want our customers to feel comfortable with their bodies and to feel empowered.

We work alongside some incredible big and tall influencers, such as Laurence Shahlaei, who also believe that there is more to be done in the way of making the clothing industry more inclusive.
