Jeans are a staple part of a man’s wardrobe and can be paired with almost anything. Polo shirt? Sure. Graphic t-shirt? Of course. Going out shirt? Absolutely. The beauty of jeans is that you can dress them up or down depending on the occasion. However, many big men will know the struggle of finding a pair of jeans that actually fits comfortably and looks equally as good. That is why we have created BC4U’s guide to choosing jeans for big men to take the guesswork out of shopping for jeans.
Straight leg jeans
Straight leg jeans have a straight leg that does not flare at the ankles like the bootcut jean. They are normally the same circumference from the knees to the hem and offer ample room for movement.
Tapered jeans are roomier at the top and narrower towards the ankle, creating a soft, fitted look whilst providing comfort to those with larger thighs.
Bootcut jeans normally have a taper to the knee and then slightly flare out at the bottom to cover the tops of your boots.
Stretch jeans incorporate a small amount of elastane to allow the jean to stretch as you move, offering a comfortable, yet stylish fit.
Comfort fit jeans provide big men with a comfortable fit with extra room throughout the leg, ideal for big and tall men who have thick thighs and calves.
Skinny jeans offer a tight fit from waist to the ankle, offering a stylish, on-trend look. Skinny jeans have a narrower opening compared to tapered jeans.
Low/mid/high rise jeans
‘Rise’ is measured by the distance between the crotch and the waist. Low rise jeans usually sit below the waist, mid sit just on the waist and high rise sits above the navel.
Measure, measure, measure
Take it from the experts, it’s no use guessing your size. To get a jean that fits big men comfortably and looks great, always measure your waist and leg length both standing up AND sitting down. This way, you get an idea of how much room you need to be comfortable throughout the day.
Different cuts suit different body shapes. We recommend choosing the cut that suits you. However, don’t be afraid to try something new - every body type is different, and what might suit you, might not suit someone else.
A good rule of thumb:
Box - skinny and straight cut jeans
Broad shoulders and smaller waist - straight, tapered and comfort fit jeans
Large waist - comfort and stretch fit jeans
Wide hips and small shoulders - straight, comfort and loose fit jeans
Choose a colour that suits your skin tone
Knowing what coloured jeans compliment your skin tone allows you to build an outfit that doesn’t wash you out. Cool skin tones suit a stonewash, black or grey denim, whilst warmer colours suit darker denims and stone coloured jeans.
What to wear with big jeans
Heading out on the town? Pair tapered jeans with a white fitted shirt. Unbutton the top 2-3 buttons to create a flattering V-shape, making the shoulder appear wider and the waist smaller.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed look a graphic t-shirt accentuates the chest and takes the focus away from the stomach. We recommend the Uptheir Atlas t-shirt in khaki, as seen on Harvey Price and strongman, Laurence Shahlaei.
What length is regular in mens jeans?
32 inches (81cm) is the regular fit for men’s jeans.
What are the best jeans for men with big thighs?
We recommend straight leg jeans, stretch jeans and comfort fit jeans for men with big thighs. These jeans typically allow more room and flexibility when sitting, standing and moving without feeling too tight at the thigh.
How to wear jeans for a big tummy
We recommend wearing a mid or high rise jean for men with larger stomachs. Trousers that sit below the belly elongates the torso, making the stomach appear larger and the legs look shorter.
Not to brag, but we offer an extensive collection of jeans for big men in different fits and styles. Our big and tall jeans are available in sizes ranging from a 42” waist, through to a 70” waist. We also offer jeans for men with larger waists and small legs, with lengths starting from 27” on some styles of jeans.
